Philippine inflation slowed for the fourth consecutive month in August, reaching 6.1%, down from 6.2% in July. This easing brings inflation closer to market consensus of 6%. The slowdown was partly attributed to lower oil and utility costs, despite upward pressure from increased food prices (like rice, fish, fruits, and vegetables) due to inclement weather and elevated transport costs.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) recently implemented its third consecutive 25 basis point rate hike, bringing the benchmark interest rate to 5%. This cumulative 75 basis points increase since April was a preemptive measure to manage inflation risks stemming from the El Niño phenomenon, potential wage increases, and fluctuating global oil prices. BSP Governor Eli M. Remolona, Jr. expressed a desire to avoid further tightening but kept the door open for additional hikes if necessary to bring inflation closer to the 3% target.

Analysts are split on the BSP's future policy moves. Pantheon Macroeconomics believes the tightening cycle is likely over, expecting inflation to cool to 3.4% by Q1 2027. Conversely, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. (OCBC) anticipates an additional 50 basis points in hikes this year, reaching a 5.5% key policy rate by year-end, to contain inflation risks. GlobalSource Partners Country Analyst Diwa C. Guinigundo emphasizes that the BSP must ensure a clearer forward guidance and that monetary policy is sufficiently restrictive in real terms to bring inflation back to target, warning against complacency given the elevated inflation outlook and peso depreciation.

The BSP's latest inflation forecasts are 6.1% for 2026, 5.4% for 2027, and 3.3% for 2028, with inflation expected to peak in the fourth quarter of this year. While some analysts, like China Banking Corp.'s Domini S. Velasquez, suggest the tightening cycle may have ended as further monetary tightening would have limited effect on supply-driven inflation, others like Bank of the Philippine Islands' Emilio S. Neri, Jr. expect the BSP to maintain a hawkish stance.
