The ring watch, a vintage accessory with a history stretching back to the 1700s, is currently experiencing a significant resurgence in popularity, especially among younger consumers. This trend is driven by a desire for novelty accessories and an embrace of 1990s and Y2K fashion aesthetics, with the ring watch appealing to those looking to subvert traditional fashion norms.

Ashley Davis, jewelry director at Wrist Aficionado, notes that this renewed interest isn't primarily from traditional watch collectors but rather from consumers interested in using timepieces as jewelry. She highlights previous waves of popularity, including Rolex producing many ring watches in the 1930s and 1940s, and another peak in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Fossil has emerged as a leader in this trend, launching its ring watch assortment in 2019 and rapidly expanding its offerings to around 15 different iterations, including collaborations with Barbie and Disney. Melissa Lowenkron, chief brand officer at Fossil, stated that the brand was inspired by vintage watch rings and the growing trend of timepieces as jewelry, aiming to merge these concepts into an iconic and nostalgic item. Other brands like Breda and Pascal, along with independent sellers, are also active in this market. The appeal is enhanced by innovations such as smaller sizes, versatile shapes, and expandable link construction, allowing for broad wearability. The trend is expected to continue growing due to its novelty and accessibility.
