A Russian drone strike on a warehouse in a village west of Kyiv resulted in the deaths of at least 37 people. The incident also led to the detonation of the warehouse. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed an investigation into why explosives had been stored in a densely populated area.
This event follows a period of heightened Russian aerial attacks on Ukraine. Just days prior, on September 1, Russian air attacks killed 12 people in Kyiv and the surrounding region, marking the sixth consecutive day of intense strikes on the Ukrainian capital. The previous month, on August 8, Russian drones killed a 3-year-old boy and his grandparents near Kyiv, with local officials confirming four deaths in total, including a child. Another individual died in the city of Kyiv from a strike involving six ballistic missiles against civilian infrastructure.
The increasing frequency and lethality of these attacks highlight ongoing concerns about Ukraine's air defense capabilities. Moscow is reportedly exploiting Ukraine’s critical shortage of interceptors for its U.S.-made Patriot systems, which are the only air defense weapons capable of shooting down ballistic missiles. Despite shooting down approximately 5,300 drones and missiles in August, this represented just under 60% of the roughly 9,000 attack drones and missiles Russia fired in the same period.
