Nepal is reeling from devastating flash floods that have claimed over 1,000 lives and left nearly 4,000 people missing, including around 600 foreign nationals. The disaster, which occurred on August 26, was caused by a massive rock-ice avalanche on the Langtang Lirung peak, where a 2,000-foot-wide mass of rock and ice fell from an elevation of 17,000 feet. This event created an immense impact, estimated to be more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb, and generated a 5.2 magnitude tremor, initially misidentified as an earthquake.
The resulting floodwaters, traveling at speeds up to 100 miles per hour, obliterated parts of three districts—Rasuwa, Dhading, and Nuwakot—and severely damaged infrastructure, including 11 operational hydropower stations and a solar plant with a combined capacity of 431.1 MW, as well as 15 other projects under construction. The debris left behind is estimated at 2.2 million tonnes. The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) confirmed the cause as a rock-ice avalanche, noting that its sudden nature made traditional warning systems ineffective.
Reconstruction efforts are expected to cost between $4 billion and $5 billion, which is close to 10% of Nepal's $45 billion economy. Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle indicated the country will need international funding, stating the need for at least "a few billion dollars." This disaster highlights Nepal's extreme vulnerability to climate change, despite its negligible contribution to global emissions. The country has been advocating for robust climate finance, including the Loss and Damage Fund, which was operationalized at COP28 to assist countries facing irreversible climate impacts. Experts are urging for enhanced preparedness, including better land-use policies, improved early-warning systems, and transboundary monitoring.
