Neoclouds, which provide GPU-native infrastructure for AI workloads, are experiencing rapid growth, with Forrester projecting the market to reach $20 billion in 2026 and Synergy Research Group reporting over $23 billion in neocloud revenues in 2025, a 200% year-over-year increase. Gartner forecasts that neoclouds will capture 20% of the $267 billion AI cloud market by 2030. These providers, including CoreWeave, Lambda Labs, and Nebius, offer lower costs, often running at roughly a third of the price of hyperscalers for the same GPU capacity, and provision services in days rather than months, making them attractive during GPU shortages.

Despite their rapid expansion and cost advantages, neoclouds face considerable financial and operational risks. McKinsey's analysis indicates that BMaaS margins can collapse to 14-16% after accounting for labor, power, and depreciation, and returns flatline if utilization falls below 80%. Analysts like Noah Weisberger of BCA Research suggest that neoclouds' heavy capital expenditures, such as CoreWeave's projected 2026 CapEx of $30-35 billion, could lead to capital destruction and lower returns on invested capital compared to hyperscalers. Weisberger recommends a two-legged trade: a long position in hyperscalers like Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon, and a short sale of a basket of neocloud companies including CoreWeave, Nebius Group, Applied Digital, Iren, TeraWulf, and Cipher Digital.

Concerns also arise from customer concentration, with Microsoft reportedly accounting for 67% of CoreWeave's 2025 revenue, and OpenAI being another top client, together making up approximately 77% of CoreWeave's revenue in 2024. While hyperscalers are also investing in and outsourcing to neoclouds to reduce their own balance sheet risks, CoreWeave's Q4 2025 earnings set Q1 2026 guidance below analyst consensus, and the company reported a GAAP net loss of $626 million in Q2 2026, with net interest expense of $640 million. These financial indicators, coupled with the rapid depreciation of GPUs (4-5 years), raise questions about the long-term sustainability and viability of neocloud providers, especially as enterprise contracts signed in 2024 and 2025 come up for renewal in late 2026, shifting evaluation criteria to production standards like sovereignty, resilience, and compliance.
