Gold prices held steady on Thursday as markets anticipated Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's address at the annual Jackson Hole symposium. Spot gold was little changed at $4,590.21 per ounce by 1107 GMT, after a 1.4% decline on Wednesday, its largest single-day drop in a week. U.S. gold futures also saw a slight dip of 0.2% to $4,643.20. The precious metal had reached an over three-month high earlier in the week, fueled by renewed concerns about dollar debasement after the U.S. Treasury's move to increase buybacks of older long-dated bonds. Investors are seeking clarity on Warsh's strategy for managing inflation and the role of the bond market in achieving the Fed's target.

Analysts noted that investors were in a "wait-and-see mode" ahead of Warsh's speech. Hamad Hussain, a climate and commodities economist at Capital Economics, suggested that if Warsh's remarks were vague, similar to his previous press conference, it could reignite fears of currency debasement and support gold prices. Conversely, if he signals concerns that easier financial conditions could complicate inflation progress, it might lead to a more hawkish outlook for the September Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, putting downward pressure on gold.

Economic data released on Wednesday showed the U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index (PCE), a key inflation gauge for the Fed, increased by 3.7% in the 12 months through July, matching June's figure. This was slightly above the Reuters economists' forecast of 3.6%. Despite this, expectations for a September U.S. rate hike have decreased to 36%, though there remains a 72% chance of a hike by December, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Gold typically loses its appeal in a high-interest-rate environment as it does not yield interest.

Other precious metals showed mixed performance: spot silver gained 0.4% to $68.34, platinum fell 0.3% to $1,824.18, and palladium lost 0.8% to $1,318.50. The market will be closely watching Warsh's debut speech at Jackson Hole on Friday, hoping he will outline a clear roadmap for returning inflation to the Fed's target and elaborate on the bond market's role in this strategy. A clear stance from Warsh could influence market sentiment and gold's trajectory.
