Kyoto Fusioneering, a company focused on developing the surrounding systems for commercial fusion power, announced the first close of its Series D funding round, securing JPY 25.72 billion (approximately $162 million). This total includes JPY 16.72 billion (approximately $105 million) in new equity and access to JPY 9.0 billion (approximately $57 million) in credit and loan facilities.

The funds will be used to accelerate the UNITY™ Program, which involves integrated demonstrations of the tritium fuel cycle and breeding blanket across Japan, Canada, and the United States. Additionally, the investment will help scale gyrotron manufacturing to meet global demand from fusion programs and expand the company's international operations. The company's cumulative equity funding has now reached over JPY 32 billion (approximately $207 million), and its valuation has surged to approximately JPY 120 billion.

CEO Satoshi Konishi emphasized that this funding demonstrates confidence in Kyoto Fusioneering's role in transitioning fusion energy from research to industrialization. The company's focus is on providing essential technologies for fusion power demonstration projects worldwide, regardless of the specific reactor concept. This includes systems for fuel heating, energy absorption, energy conversion, and fuel generation and recycling.

This funding round highlights a broader trend of significant investment in the fusion energy sector. For context, Commonwealth Fusion Systems recently raised $1 billion, bringing its total capital to $4 billion, and Helion Energy secured $465 million, reaching a $15.5 billion valuation. Pacific Fusion has also raised over $1 billion. These investments signify growing investor confidence in the commercial viability and future of fusion power.
