This critical ingredient is exclusively supplied by the Mul family farm, which entered into an unprecedented partnership with Chanel in 1987. This deal was revolutionary, being the first direct collaboration between a luxury brand and Grasse farmers, and it was crucial for maintaining the perfume's consistent quality as Chanel faced challenges in sourcing sufficient, high-quality jasmine in the 1980s.

The Mul family, farming in Grasse since the mid-1800s, dedicates 30 hectares (and recently expanded by an additional 10 hectares) to growing jasmine and roses solely for Chanel. This exclusivity ensures that the distinct "terroir" of Grasse, similar to wine grapes, contributes to the flower's specific scent profile, which cannot be replicated by jasmine from other regions. Approximately 1,000 jasmine flowers are needed for a single 1-ounce bottle of Chanel No. 5 parfum, underscoring the crop's importance.

The cultivation process involves meticulous hand-picking, with workers collecting up to 3.5 kg of delicate jasmine flowers daily. Speed is essential, as the flowers are rushed to an on-site factory to extract their fragrance using a 150-year-old technique. The process yields a thick wax from about 35 million jasmine flowers per 22-pound tub, which is then refined into an "absolute" and sent to Chanel's factory near Paris. This vertical integration allows Chanel full traceability from field to bottle, a rare feat in the industry.

Joseph Mul, an 86-year-old patriarch of the six-generation family farm, highlights the challenges the industry faced, including the sale of farmlands for real estate development in the French Riviera and competition from cheaper, lower-quality flowers grown elsewhere. The partnership with Chanel not only saved the Mul farm but also helped revitalize the Grasse perfume industry, with local efforts like Mayor Jérôme Viaud designating Grasse a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Site and blocking development on 170 acres to preserve agricultural land.
