Cities like Phoenix, Arizona, and Las Vegas, Nevada, are projected to see highs well above 110 degrees Fahrenheit, with Phoenix expecting afternoon highs between 112 and 117 degrees through Monday. This extreme heat extends to nearly 12 million people in the Southwest, Mountain West, and northern Great Plains under a Level 4 "extreme" heat risk, with an additional 20 million facing a Level 3 "major" heat risk.
This heat wave is exacerbating wildfire concerns, particularly in regions already impacted by drought and low snow accumulation during the past winter. The National Weather Service has issued extreme heat warnings across Southern California, Arizona, and parts of Nevada and Utah. Meteorologists are anticipating significant fire activity, especially in California, where the peak wildfire season is approaching. States like Colorado, Utah, Washington, and Oregon have already seen large wildfires this summer, and the current conditions will further dry out vegetation.
Record daily high temperatures are expected in at least 12 states, affecting nearly 50 million people under heat alerts. Flagstaff, Arizona, is forecast to surpass its 1977 record of 92 degrees Fahrenheit, potentially reaching 94 degrees. Sheridan, Wyoming, is also expected to exceed its 2008 record of 103 degrees, with a forecast of 106 degrees. San Francisco, usually cooler due to coastal fog, may reach 77 degrees, several degrees above its August average, while inland Bay Area temperatures could hit the 90s. Even nighttime temperatures offer little relief, with morning lows in Las Vegas and Phoenix only dropping into the 90s.
The heat dome is predicted to persist, with extreme temperatures continuing through at least the first week of August, and potentially longer. The prolonged heat and lack of overnight cooling increase the risk of heat-related illnesses and place strain on water and energy supplies, particularly in the already beleaguered Colorado River Basin. Scientists note that while tying a single event to climate change requires specific analysis, global heat waves are becoming hotter, more frequent, and longer-lasting, with 2024 confirmed as the hottest year on record.
