Ukrainian forces are actively engaged in counterattacks near Nova Sich, Mohrytsia, Ivolzhanske, and Pysarivka, effectively slowing Russian advances in these areas. This contradicts Russia's narrative of an unopposed advance across the entire theater of operations in northern Ukraine. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) notes that Russia's claims of significant gains in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions are not supported by evidence of force redeployments, equipment concentration, or intensified offensive operations.
Simultaneously, Ukraine has achieved notable successes at sea and against Russian infrastructure. Ukrainian forces sank a Russian container ship carrying 1,300 tonnes of cargo and struck three Russian oil refineries. President Zelenskyy stated that these refineries process millions of tonnes of oil annually. These actions highlight Ukraine's continued ability to inflict damage on Russian military and economic targets.
Despite these Ukrainian gains, Russia launched a significant missile attack on Kyiv, resulting in at least nine deaths and 30 injuries, including four children. Only one of 27 ballistic missiles was intercepted, and President Zelenskyy appealed for more Patriot air defense systems, citing a shortage of interceptor missiles. Russia's defense ministry claimed to have targeted military-industrial infrastructure, including factories producing missile and drone components, although Ukrainian officials reported damage to residential areas.
