The field of canine longevity research is rapidly advancing, with scientists exploring various avenues to slow down aging in dogs. One such initiative is a $4.2 million project led by Assistant Professor of Animal Science Huson and Assistant Professor of Small Animal Medicine Dr. John Loftus at Cornell University. This study focuses on nearly 100 Alaskan sled dogs, aged 8 to 13, to determine if a drug inhibiting reverse transcriptase can mitigate aging, reduce inflammation, and decrease the incidence of cancer, with the goal of extending both healthspan and lifespan. The project, funded by private donations through the Vaika Foundation, is testing the drug's effectiveness through assessments of immune function, behavior, and physical condition every six months.

Another significant undertaking is the Dog Aging Project, which began in late 2019 and now includes almost 30,000 dogs. Researchers aim to follow these dogs for at least five years, gathering extensive data on their lifestyle, diet, and environment through detailed surveys. A subset of these dogs will participate in a clinical study examining rapamycin, a prescription medication used in humans to treat cancer and prevent organ rejection, for its potential to improve canine healthspan. This project also highlighted a new logarithmic formula for comparing dog and human ages, developed by researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), which suggests a one-year-old puppy is approximately equivalent to a 30-year-old human, and a 12-year-old Labrador retriever to a 70-year-old human.

Loyal, a San Francisco-based biotech startup, is developing LOY-002, a caloric restriction mimetic drug designed to extend the healthy lifespan of senior dogs. LOY-002 is currently undergoing the STAY trial, described as the largest clinical trial in veterinary medicine, involving 1,300 dogs across 72 veterinary clinics. As of May 2026, the study is about two and a half years in, with early data indicating at least a one-year lifespan difference between treated and placebo groups. Loyal is seeking FDA conditional approval for LOY-002, which would allow the drug to be marketed before the trial concludes. These diverse research efforts underscore the growing interest and investment in extending the healthy lives of dogs, with potential implications for human aging as well.
