CME Group’s introduction of 24/7 trading for its new one-ounce gold futures contract has been met with robust demand since its launch on July 24, 2026. This initiative allows for continuous trading, including weekends, marking a significant shift for the gold market by enabling investors to react immediately to global events. The new contract, ticker QO, is designed to provide nonstop access for traders to respond to price movements at any time.

While the 24/7 trading applies to the smaller one-ounce gold futures contract, CME’s larger, benchmark 100-ounce gold futures contract continues to observe regular trading hours, remaining closed on weekends. This distinction highlights CME's strategy to cater to different segments of the market, with the smaller contract offering flexibility for individual traders and those seeking to hedge against geopolitical uncertainties over weekends. The new contract's successful self-certification with the CFTC occurred on July 2, 2026, paving the way for its official migration to the CME Globex market segment on July 19, 2026.

The strong demand for the 24/7 gold futures is evidenced by substantial trading volumes reported shortly after its debut. This move positions CME to compete with decentralized and crypto exchanges that have historically offered continuous trading for tokenized gold and other assets. The ability to trade around the clock, even on weekends, is particularly appealing to investors who wish to mitigate risks associated with sudden geopolitical events or market-moving news that occur outside traditional trading hours. This continuous access aims to reduce the "Monday catch-up" effect seen in other markets.

CME Group also has plans to introduce a new, smaller crude oil futures contract, one-tenth the size of the existing Micro WTI futures, which is slated to debut on August 30, 2026. This oil-linked contract, along with the 24/7 gold contracts, is cash-settled and listed on NYMEX and COMEX, respectively, pending regulatory review. These expansions reflect CME's broader strategy to offer more accessible and continuously tradable commodity products.
