English football club Liverpool FC is currently in discussions regarding a significant minority stake acquisition. A consortium led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, with support from the family of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, is negotiating with Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool's US-based owners. This potential deal could value the club at more than $6 billion, making it one of the highest valuations for a football club.
The investment group has engaged advisors and is actively involved in discussions with FSG. FSG has confirmed the consortium's interest in making a strategic minority investment. Reports suggest that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has also held preliminary talks with the Bhatia-led group about joining the consortium, although no agreement is imminent.
FSG acquired Liverpool for £300 million in 2010. The club reported record revenues exceeding £700 million in the recent financial year. The proposed investment follows a trend of high-profile deals in English football, including the 2022 takeover of Chelsea FC and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe's 2023 acquisition of a minority stake in Manchester United, which reportedly valued the rival club at over $6.3 billion. Bhatia has also transferred his shareholding in Queens Park Rangers to avoid holding stakes in two football clubs, a move often required by league regulations.
