French billionaire Xavier Niel, owner of the telecoms company Iliad, has acquired a 2.5% stake in Vodafone through his investment vehicle, Atlas Investissement. This stake is valued at around £750 million and makes him one of Vodafone's top ten investors. Atlas Investissement stated its support for Vodafone's public intention to pursue consolidation and infrastructure separation, hinting at opportunities to accelerate these processes.

Atlas Investissement's move was announced even though it was below the 3% threshold for public disclosure. This acquisition puts additional pressure on Vodafone's management, led by Nick Read, who has been under scrutiny to deliver on consolidation promises amidst a weak share price. Analysts from JPMorgan Cazenove noted this as the first time a stake-builder has openly discussed the need for strategic improvements at Vodafone.

Niel has a history of shaking up corporate strategy and governance, having previously agitated for change at Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield. Atlas Investissement believes there are opportunities to streamline Vodafone's footprint, further reduce costs, improve profitability, and accelerate broadband development in key markets. This investment comes after Vodafone rejected an €11 billion offer for its Italian business from Iliad and Apax Partners earlier in the year.
