Luciana Lixandru, who established Sequoia Capital's European presence in 2020, believes Europe is entering an "Act Two" where its founders are aiming to build $100 billion companies, moving beyond the previous $1 billion goal. She emphasized this at the Sifted Summit, highlighting that European founders are developing more defensible businesses with global ambition from day one. Sequoia is actively looking for founders with extraordinary ambition paired with practical execution capabilities, believing Europe offers unique strengths like sustainable growth and navigation of complex regulations, leading to companies built to last decades.

Lixandru identifies Artificial Intelligence and robotics as Europe's most promising sectors for achieving these high valuations. She sees London as the "undeniable hub" of Europe's AI revolution, citing the city's talent pool, progressive regulatory framework, and deep financial markets. The robotics sector is also experiencing a powerful resurgence, benefiting from Europe's strong industrial heritage and engineering talent from institutions like TUM in Munich and ETH in Zurich. These regions are producing more sophisticated and commercially viable robotics solutions.

Fintech remains crucial but is evolving, with Lixandru stating that the next wave will focus on embedded finance, B2B solutions, and AI-driven personalized products, rather than just customer acquisition. She also predicted success for businesses working on stablecoins, reaffirming Europe's strong position in the fintech landscape. Sequoia remains bullish on Europe, with Lixandru confirming plans to expand the firm's team on the continent to capitalize on the opportunity to build "generational businesses" like Revolut, ElevenLabs, and Trade Republic.

While Lixandru noted the high valuations and hype surrounding AI, she mentioned that deals are not being struck with the same haste seen during the COVID investment bubble. She believes Europe's path to creating centi-billion dollar companies requires founders with unprecedented ambition, patience, and the ability to attract global talent and capital.
