Stellantis NV announced temporary production halts at several of its European plants in late 2025 due to lagging market demand. The automaker paused production of the Alfa Romeo Tonale and Fiat Panda in Pomigliano, Italy, starting September 29, 2025. Workers at the Pomigliano plant, numbering around 3,800, were furloughed. Additionally, the company confirmed a halt at its Poissy plant near Paris from October 13 to October 31, 2025, impacting the production of Opel and DS cars.
Further production adjustments were made at the Mulhouse plant in northeastern France, where operations were temporarily stopped from October 27 to November 2, 2025. This move affected approximately 2,000 of the 4,700 employees at the plant, which manufactures the Peugeot 308, Peugeot 408, and DS7 models. The company stated these measures were taken to align production rates with a "difficult" European market and efficiently manage inventory.
While Stellantis committed to keeping its Poissy plant operational through at least 2028 with a €100 million investment to transform it into a hub for auto part production, recycling, and 3D printing, car assembly at the site is slated to cease by 2029. These temporary halts underscore the challenges Stellantis faces with chronic overcapacity in Europe amid fluctuating demand.
