Security measures at RAF Fairford, a US air base in southwest England, were significantly heightened in recent days. Roadblocks and armed police were observed preventing access, and emergency vehicles were parked nearby. This increased security comes after five men were arrested early on Sunday near the base on suspicion of explosive and terrorism offenses. Local police received a report of "three suspicious vehicles" heading towards RAF Fairford at 00:45 BST on Sunday.
The arrests occurred near Whelford, a village approximately two miles south-east of the base. A bomb disposal team was deployed to examine several vehicles, establishing a 400-meter cordon. Aerial footage reportedly showed a remote-controlled robot approaching two stationary white vans in a wooded area, though police have not confirmed its use. Gloucestershire Police Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone stated that a large emergency service presence would remain for some time as "work to establish the full nature of the incident is ongoing."
Counter Terrorism Policing is now leading the investigation, with Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans confirming close collaboration with partners to understand the circumstances. The incident led to the evacuation of 85 households, with residents advised to shelter at a nearby leisure center. Some residents reported being woken by police in the middle of the night and ordered to leave their homes. The airbase is known to host United States Air Force personnel and US B-1 bombers, which have reportedly been involved in missions against Iran.
