Canada wants to become an energy superpower, and if it has the will, there is a way

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has dramatically changed Canada's energy policy, moving away from the green initiatives of his predecessor. Carney is now actively promoting Canada as an "energy superpower," a significant departure from his earlier stance as a "climate-change warrior" in his previous roles as an executive and central banker. This shift includes dismantling prior environmental regulations and advocating for increased fossil fuel production.

The push to become an energy superpower is driven by Canada's vast energy resources. The country is the world's fourth-largest producer of oil and fifth-largest producer of natural gas. It also possesses diverse energy sources including hydro, geothermal, wind, solar, and a burgeoning nuclear industry. This abundant energy potential, combined with global geopolitical shifts creating demand for stable energy suppliers, presents a "once in a lifetime opportunity" according to the head of the International Energy Agency.

While the concept of Canada as an "energy superpower" has been discussed by previous prime ministers, including Stephen Harper, its full realization has been hindered by a segment of the Canadian electorate resistant to increased mining and oil and gas production. However, proponents argue that achieving this status could bring significant economic benefits through job creation, income generation, and the development of specialized financial and service capabilities with export potential. It could also strengthen national unity and support international allies by providing energy without political strings.

To solidify this transformation, Canada needs a compelling national narrative that goes beyond purely economic gains, emphasizing the moral and global benefits of its energy production. This includes potentially alleviating energy poverty in other nations and offering an alternative to less scrupulous energy suppliers. The current government under Mark Carney appears committed to this long-term goal, which is expected to take a decade or more to fully achieve.
