This action by the White House continues an escalating dispute with certain news organizations.
This incident follows an earlier ban on CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from White House grounds and events, which began on September 19, 2026. On that date, journalists from these outlets had their White House passes confiscated and were denied entry, after President Trump announced he was banning them over their coverage of his administration. The White House had also removed CNN from its Monday assignment as the television pool representative for the entire White House press corps, a move that broke with decades of precedent.
In response to the initial ban, CNN, MS NOW, and Politico filed a lawsuit, arguing that the ban violated their First Amendment rights and due process. The broader television pool, composed of CBS News, ABC News, NBC News, Fox News, and CNN, expressed solidarity with CNN. When CNN was prevented from fulfilling its assigned pool duties for a trip to the United Nations General Assembly, the other four networks decided to suspend the TV pool coverage altogether, stating there would be "no replacement pool put in place" as a form of pushback against the White House's ability to dictate who participates in the pool.
