Nadeem Meghji, the global head of real estate at Blackstone, is leaving the firm, marking another significant departure from its commercial-property investment division. Meghji's exit comes less than a year after he assumed sole control of Blackstone's real estate business. Previously, he co-headed the global real estate division with Kathleen McCarthy, who departed in 2025 after 15 years with the firm.
Following Meghji's departure, Blackstone has appointed David Levine and Giovanni Cutaia as co-heads of the real estate business. Levine previously led Blackstone's Americas real estate group, while Cutaia served as the president of Blackstone real estate. According to an internal memo from CEO Steve Schwarzman, Meghji plans to spend time with his young family before pursuing new endeavors and will leave Blackstone by year-end.
Meghji joined Blackstone in 2008 and steadily rose through the ranks. His departure is attributed to personal reasons, with sources indicating a desire to spend more time with his family. This leadership change occurs as Blackstone manages a vast global real estate portfolio valued at over $600 billion. The firm closed a record-setting $30.4 billion global real estate fund in 2023, the largest of its kind. The real estate division has also seen approximately a dozen senior managing directors depart over the past three years, highlighting a broader trend of leadership turnover within the group.
Despite the leadership changes, Blackstone's real estate operations remain substantial and financially robust. Its Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust (BREIT) delivered an 11% net return over the past 12 months, and institutional Blackstone Real Estate Partners funds appreciated by 19% in the same period. The firm's succession plan, installing two long-tenured internal executives, suggests a focus on stability and continuity rather than a strategic shift. The new co-heads will inherit and continue the firm's significant investments in areas like data centers and rental housing, with no indication of a change in strategy.
