Tencent Holdings has rolled out TenPayGo, a mobile payment application specifically designed for foreign visitors to China. This launch comes as Tencent seeks to capitalize on China's increasing inbound tourism and precedes the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled to be held in Shenzhen.
The TenPayGo app, developed by Tencent's WeChat Pay team, aims to provide a one-stop digital services platform for overseas visitors, integrating mobile payment functionalities that allow users to spend directly at a multitude of merchants. The app is currently available on the Apple App Store, in version 1.0, and supports English. Future enhancements are planned to include additional local transportation and lifestyle services.
In addition to TenPayGo, Tencent is implementing broader initiatives to ease payments for international travelers. This includes a partnership between TenPay Global, Tencent's cross-border payment platform, and PayPal World, enabling U.S.-based PayPal users to make payments at WeChat Pay merchants in China by scanning QR codes. Furthermore, Tencent is waiving the 3% transaction fee for first-time users who link an international bank card to WeChat for 90 days, for daily spending up to RMB 1,000 (approximately $137.28 USD as of the prompt's date). The company is also providing in-app payment guidance in 16 languages and establishing offline service desks at key locations.
These efforts align with China's broader objective to attract more foreign tourists by making cashless payments more accessible and convenient. WeChat Pay and Ant Group's Alipay dominate China's cashless payment landscape, being widely accepted in taxis, restaurants, and other establishments. Tencent has also expanded its "Pay with Your Home E-Wallet" service, integrating with over 40 overseas wallet institutions globally to allow international users to pay with their familiar e-wallets without needing a new app.
