David Rubenstein, co-founder of the Carlyle Group, acquired the Baltimore Orioles for $1.7 billion in 2024, an investment detailed in his new book, "Inside the Owner's Box." The book explores the childhood dreams that motivated him to pursue this significant personal investment. Rubenstein's book also includes insights from other professional sports team owners, discussing aspects like team valuations, stadium food sales, and revenue streams, although some critics note the questions posed to fellow owners can be "softballs."
The process of acquiring the Orioles was not without its challenges. During negotiations in 2023, Rubenstein faced an insulting moment on a Zoom call where his financial acumen was questioned, despite his extensive career in finance. This led him to briefly withdraw from the deal before reconsidering. He notes that an all-stock deal was considered to make the transaction tax-free, which was a significant attraction.
Rubenstein highlights that while professional sports teams are businesses and owners generally seek profit, the best owners prioritize winning over the financial bottom line. He acknowledges the "bubble-like frenzy" in sports team investments but proceeded with the Orioles acquisition, despite having previously avoided such ventures. He also observes that, historically, owners of teams in major U.S. sports (baseball, football, basketball, hockey) haven't always made meaningful operational profits, with NFL teams being a notable exception due to substantial media deals. The real financial gains often come from the eventual sale of a franchise as valuations continue to rise.
