Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has publicly disclosed that he has lost 80 pounds with the assistance of a GLP-1 weight-loss medication. His decision to start the medication in the spring of 2024 was prompted by a diagnosis of pre-diabetes and subsequently Type II diabetes at age 58. Pritzker emphasized that the medication, combined with daily exercise and diet, helped him normalize his blood sugar levels and stop taking insulin nine months prior to his public announcement. He stated that his weight loss medication is covered by the state's insurance plan due to his diabetes diagnosis, not specifically for weight loss.

Pritzker's disclosure comes amidst increasing speculation about a potential presidential run in 2028, though he has consistently denied that his weight loss is tied to such ambitions. He asserted that he has struggled with his weight his entire life and that the GLP-1 medication provided a new opportunity to improve his health. He also expressed a desire to be healthy for his children and potential grandchildren, viewing the medication not as a shortcut but as a necessary tool for his success.

In July 2023, Illinois expanded coverage for GLP-1 medications like Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Ozempic under the state's group health insurance program for eligible state workers, including for weight loss. This expansion cost the state $147 million in fiscal year 2025. Pritzker defended this policy decision, stating it was implemented before he began taking the medication and benefits taxpayers by potentially reducing insulin dependency. However, he noted that future cuts to weight loss drug coverage for budgetary reasons are a possibility, and expanding coverage to Medicaid recipients is not currently feasible due to financial constraints.
