Three major news organizations – CNN, MS NOW, and Politico – are preparing legal challenges against the Trump administration following President Donald Trump's decision to ban their reporters from the White House. This action, initiated on Friday, escalated over the weekend as journalists from these outlets were denied entry and had their press credentials deactivated when attempting to access the White House complex.
Reporters Betsy Klein of CNN, Akayla Gardner of MS NOW, and Cheyenne Haslett of Politico were specifically turned away. This move by the administration has been widely criticized by First Amendment groups and media watchdogs, who argue it constitutes a direct attack on press freedom and violates constitutional protections. White House Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz, however, defended the ban, stating that the President is within his rights to limit access to journalists he believes are not acting in good faith, citing a Supreme Court opinion.
The White House further escalated the situation by removing CNN from its Monday assignment as the television pool representative for the entire White House press corps, a decision that breaks decades of precedent. The targeted news organizations have strongly condemned the ban, with Politico Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Greenberger stating they will "vigorously defend our First Amendment rights." CNN affirmed it "will not be deflected from our duty to hold the government and other public bodies to account," and MS NOW declared its intent to "take any and all steps necessary to defend our First Amendment rights and the essential role of independent journalism in our democracy."
