The region, historically known for aerospace innovation since the space race, is seeing a new wave of investment, particularly in the aerospace and defense sectors, creating substantial opportunities for both industry giants and smaller businesses.
In the past six months alone, Los Angeles County has received an estimated $7 billion in major aerospace and defense contracts. Notable awards include $1.6 billion in U.S. Space Force satellite contracts supporting Rocket Lab in Long Beach and Northrop Grumman’s Space Park campus in Redondo Beach. Additionally, Caltech secured a $2.39 billion NASA agreement to continue operating the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and other contracts totaled over $2.14 billion.
Southern California's attractiveness for manufacturing is also driven by executives reconsidering traditional notions of "low cost" due to supply-chain disruptions, geopolitical uncertainty, rising overseas labor costs, and transportation expenses. The region offers advantages in speed, quality control, intellectual property protection, and responsiveness to customers. Even for companies requiring imported materials, Los Angeles benefits from its major port infrastructure.
Aerospace startups are increasingly choosing Southern California, particularly the South Bay region, due to its concentration of companies producing hardware like satellites and rockets, and its "talent dense" environment. For example, Max Arshavsky, founder of Zenno Astronautics, specifically chose California over other states due to the existing ecosystem and proven success. Alessio Lorusso, CEO of Italian additive manufacturer Roboze, also relocated to Southern California, citing the collaborative culture among executives.
The manufacturing landscape in LA is characterized by advanced technology, including sophisticated robotics and large-scale 3D printers, which are transforming traditional mom-and-pop tooling operations. This transformation highlights Los Angeles's enduring spirit of innovation, extending beyond Hollywood fame to embrace a rich history of car culture, aerospace dreams, and industrial factories, making "anything possible here."
