Qatar is significantly reorienting its sovereign wealth fund strategy by launching a new platform called Doha Investment. This platform will be dedicated to managing and growing the domestic portfolio of Qatar's wealth fund, which is valued at hundreds of billions of dollars. The primary goals of this initiative are to accelerate long-term value creation within the Qatari economy and to enhance private-sector participation.
Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani announced the creation of Doha Investment at the Qatar Economic Forum in New York. This move represents a substantial shift for the gas-rich nation, which has historically focused its sovereign wealth investments on international markets. The new platform will initially oversee 45 state-owned enterprises, representing approximately one-third of the Qatar Investment Authority's (QIA) total assets. This includes major national champions like Qatar Airways Group, QNB Group, Ooredoo Group, Qatari Diar, Katara Hospitality, and Hassad Food, with over 20 of these companies reporting revenues exceeding QAR 1 billion in 2025.
Doha Investment's mandate extends to strengthening these existing national champions, fostering the development of new companies, supporting privatization efforts, and increasing the private sector's role in the economy. The platform aims to build new champions in priority sectors such as advanced technologies, manufacturing, supply chain, and healthcare, including initiatives like Qai, a national artificial intelligence platform. Over the next five years, Qatar anticipates launching new infrastructure projects worth approximately $38.5 billion, including public-private partnerships, and attracting an additional $22.5 billion in private investments for real estate and hospitality projects, totaling over $60 billion in opportunities. The success of Doha Investment will be measured by its contribution to building a more competitive, resilient, and diversified Qatari economy.
