President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that his proposed 250-foot triumphal arch, intended for a traffic circle near Arlington National Cemetery, would be converted into a "top grade Military Complex." This decision, he said, was made at the "strong request" of the U.S. military and for national security. The complex will be designed to house, store, and rapidly deploy large numbers of drones, snipers, and sniper ammunition, with snipers positioned on both the roof and plaza areas.
Trump elaborated on Truth Social that this unique facility would have no equal worldwide. He highlighted that Washington, D.C., unlike 59 other major cities and capitals, currently lacks a triumphal arch, asserting that his project would be "by far, the greatest of them all!" The arch's development is part of Trump's broader initiative to leave his architectural mark on the nation's capital, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence this year. Other projects include a new White House ballroom, which Trump has also previously described as a "military complex" for defensive purposes, as well as renovating the Kennedy Center, refurbishing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and rebuilding a golf course in East Potomac Park.
The project has faced pushback from various groups, including veterans and historic preservationists, due to concerns over its height impacting sightlines between D.C. monuments and Arlington National Cemetery, and its proximity to Ronald Reagan Washington International Airport. However, the Federal Aviation Administration determined on Friday that the arch poses no hazard to flights, despite concerns from Democratic lawmakers regarding its potential impact on an already complex airspace. Work on the arch, clad in granite and topped with three golden statues, was expected to begin this month with excavation near the Arlington Memorial Bridge.
