Key players are making substantial investments. Waste Connections is working with BCG on seven AI-driven projects, committing approximately $100 million and anticipating an initial $100 million margin improvement by 2028-2029. These projects include a major AI-enabled routing overhaul for its 14,000 trucks, aiming for 50 to 60 basis points of margin improvement by integrating internal software with external data from Google and Waze. Republic Services projects $100 million in additional earnings before income, taxes, depreciation, and amortization by 2028, primarily from AI-based routing efficiencies.
AI is also transforming pricing strategies and safety. Waste Connections developed an AI pricing engine for commercial customers that analyzes specific data to offer individualized prices, leading to a 20% to 25% reduction in churn and improved price retention. WM utilizes AI to analyze customer lifetime value and inform pricing adjustments, considering factors like missed pickups and customer longevity. In terms of safety, one major U.S. waste fleet retrofitted trucks with AI-powered camera and radar systems, resulting in zero preventable collisions over a year. WM is expanding autonomous landfill equipment operations, such as bulldozers and compactors, at its Marana Regional Landfill, aiming for enhanced safety and efficiency while allowing operators to work in more comfortable, remote environments. Technologies like HARR-E, a self-driving trash robot, and noiseless EV garbage trucks are also emerging, though widespread adoption is expected to take time.
While full autonomy for vocational vehicles is still distant, driver assistance technologies are becoming industry standards. WM's Smart Truck routing software, which incorporates AI, has already generated over $300 million in annual run-rate earnings through reduced operating costs and service upgrades. The use of AI-equipped cameras in sanitation vehicles to detect code violations, such as tall grass or graffiti, by companies like City Detect, has also been noted, although it has faced privacy concerns and backlash from residents in some cities like Huntsville, Alabama, and Dallas.
