Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding afterparty in the Bahamas this May, described as a lavish three-day affair, was heavily financed by Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch with close ties to President Vladimir Putin, according to ProPublica. Kremlev reportedly paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for expenses, including renting a private island, a $70,000 fireworks display, and other large-ticket items. National security experts and former FBI officials expressed alarm, with Frank Montoya Jr. stating that Trump Jr. put himself in a precarious position by accepting the largesse, raising questions about Kremlev's motivations.
Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Anderson, confirmed that Kremlev "very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding" as a "wedding gift from a friend." They stated that the island vacation was pre-planned, and they decided to get married before it, arriving as newlyweds. Donald Trump Sr. downplayed the event, calling it an "afterparty" and "not a big deal," while claiming he had no knowledge of Kremlev.
US congressional Democrats, including Robert Garcia of California and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, have initiated an investigation into Kremlev's financing of the event. Garcia highlighted that Kremlev has been sanctioned by Ukraine, questioning what the oligarch received in return for his expenditures. Ethics watchdog groups like Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) also raised concerns about the appearance of a conflict of interest, with Jordan Libowitz of CREW noting that "People don't just give hundreds of thousands of dollars to a random acquaintance without wanting something."
Despite the controversy, a spokesperson for Trump Jr. did not dispute the payments, stating that Kremlev is a "personal friend" met through a mutual hunting friend, and that there is no business relationship. Kremlev, who heads the International Boxing Association (IBA), financed the event through an IBA-affiliated entity in Dubai. Public reports suggest Trump Jr. could have afforded the celebration himself, with Forbes estimating his net worth at approximately $300 million.
