INEOS, a British chemicals group, has launched the Greensand project, marking the European Union's first full-scale carbon dioxide storage operation. The project, located in the Danish North Sea, was officially opened by King Frederik X of Denmark on September 18. This initiative is a collaboration between INEOS Energy, Harbour Energy, and the Danish North Sea Fund (Nordsøfonden), and it aims to address industrial emissions by providing a practical solution for CO2 storage.
The Greensand project will initially store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. The CO2, primarily sourced from Danish biomethane plants, is liquefied, transported by truck to Port Esbjerg, shipped on the EU's first purpose-built CO2 carrier, and then injected into the Nini West reservoir, a depleted oil field approximately 1,800 meters beneath the seabed, 250 kilometers offshore. The project has been designed for significant expansion, with the potential to scale up to 4-8 million tonnes per year as demand for carbon capture and storage (CCS) grows.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Chairman of INEOS, emphasized that the project is not a pilot but a fully operational carbon storage business, demonstrating that the technology works and is ready for use. He highlighted that such solutions are crucial for Europe to achieve net-zero emissions while maintaining industrial competitiveness and preventing job losses. European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen echoed this sentiment, stating that the project is a significant milestone, proving that carbon storage is a practical reality and offering a pathway for European industries to transition to a low-carbon future without sacrificing production or employment.
While the project is lauded as a critical step in combating climate change, it faces scrutiny from environmental groups. Critics argue that CCS technology might disincentivize efforts to directly reduce CO2 emissions and that it is expensive, with some suggesting that emission reductions could be achieved more cost-effectively through existing technologies like wind, solar, and electric vehicles. However, groups like Greenpeace Denmark acknowledge the potential role of CCS for sectors with hard-to-abate or impossible-to-abate emissions.
The Greensand project is poised to contribute significantly to Denmark's emission reduction targets, potentially offsetting almost 40% of the country's goals. It also positions the EU to meet its ambitious CO2 capture and storage targets of 50 million tonnes annually by 2030, rising to 250–280 million tonnes by 2040, providing essential infrastructure for industries across Europe to manage their carbon footprints.
