Warren Buffett has transitioned from his role as Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway to Chairman Emeritus, effective immediately. His son, Howard G. Buffett, a Berkshire director since 1993, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Board. Warren Buffett, at 96 years old, will remain a member of the Board of Directors, continuing to offer his "valued judgment and perspective."
The change in leadership formalizes a long-standing succession plan at the conglomerate. Greg Abel, who serves as Chief Executive Officer, will continue to manage the company's operations. Warren Buffett highlighted Abel's performance, stating that he has "exceeded" expectations and has been making key decisions for some time. Howard Buffett's primary responsibility will be to safeguard the company's culture and values, which Warren Buffett considers more valuable than anything on the balance sheet.
Howard Buffett has a long history with Berkshire Hathaway, having served as a director for 33 years. He also brings extensive experience from his role as Chairman and CEO of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, focusing on global food security and conflict mitigation, and from serving on numerous public and private company boards, including The Coca-Cola Company and Archer Daniels Midland. Susan L. Decker will continue in her role as Lead Independent Director.
