U.S. insurer Prudential Financial Inc. is considering selling its approximately one-third stake in South African financial-services firm Alexforbes. The Newark-based company has informed billionaire Patrice Motsepe’s African Rainbow Capital (ARC), the largest shareholder of Alexforbes, and Alexforbes itself, about its deliberations. Prudential initially acquired its stake in Alexforbes in 2022, joining ARC and other institutional investors. Alexforbes is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and has a market value of about 10.7 billion rand (approximately $627 million).

The potential exit by Prudential could significantly impact Motsepe's African Rainbow Capital, which holds close to half of Alexforbes' equity. Prudential is exploring several options, including selling its shares to African Rainbow Capital, placing them with another strategic investor, or pursuing a broader market sale. The outcome of these discussions is expected to influence ARC's control over Alexforbes, a key asset in Motsepe's growing financial services portfolio, which includes stakes in insurers, banks, asset managers, and telecoms.

This move by Prudential highlights a trend of foreign investors reassessing their exposure to South Africa amid economic challenges such as sluggish growth, power shortages, and policy uncertainties. For Motsepe, 63, this situation presents an opportunity either to consolidate ARC's influence at Alexforbes or to collaborate with a new international partner, aligning with his long-term goal of broadening Black ownership in the South African economy through African Rainbow Capital. Alexforbes, founded in 1935, is a prominent retirement and investment brand in South Africa and operates in Botswana, Namibia, and Jersey, providing services from fund administration to financial planning.
