Venture capitalists have invested more than $3 billion in brain-computer interface (BCI) startups since 2024, driven by clinical advancements, particularly from Elon Musk's Neuralink. Despite this significant investment, the technology remains experimental, highly invasive, and its commercial viability is still unproven. Neuralink alone has raised over $1.34 billion and is valued at more than $9 billion, yet as of January, it only had 21 participants in its clinical trials worldwide. The current technology involves surgically implanting electrodes into the brain to transmit information to an external device. This invasiveness poses a significant hurdle for user acquisition, as many potential patients, even those with severe neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's disease, express hesitation about having foreign objects in their brains.

The resistance to invasive procedures is evident in the low adoption rates for existing BCI-like treatments; only 1-2% of eligible Parkinson's patients in the US annually undergo deep brain stimulation. However, the potential market for BCIs is substantial, with over 90 million stroke survivors globally, 11 million people with Parkinson's, and 20-25 million people with non-cataract blindness. Beyond medical applications, some investors and entrepreneurs envision a future where BCIs enhance cognitive function and memory for healthy individuals, similar to how smartphones are ubiquitous today. This perspective sees BCIs as a tool for longevity, biohacking, and even augmenting human cognition to keep pace with AI.

Chinese neurotechnology firms are also experiencing a financing boom, with companies like Shuli Innovation, Neuracle, and BrainCo advancing towards IPOs. Neuracle, whose invasive BCI medical device for hand motor function compensation was approved in March, plans to raise $2.5 billion. BrainCo's Series B+ financing round reached $2 billion, marking the largest single financing in the domestic BCI field. Alibaba and Tencent have jointly invested $500 million in Jieti Medical. Even a company like Gestalt, established in 2026, secured $570 million in funding despite having no products or clinical data. These investments highlight a competitive landscape, with companies like Precision Neuroscience and Onward also vying for market share, though pricing and insurance coverage remain critical challenges for broad adoption, with initial devices potentially costing upwards of $100,000.

While the market for BCIs treating severe motor impairment could be worth billions annually within a few years, according to Michael Mager of Precision Neuroscience, the technology faces significant technical hurdles in collecting, exporting, and interpreting brain signals. Ethical concerns are also prominent, particularly regarding the non-medical enhancement of human abilities. Experts suggest that the medical side is well-regulated, but the expansion of BCIs into enhancement raises new questions about permissible limits. Despite the enthusiasm and substantial investments, the industry is still in its early stages, with many unknowns regarding long-term cost, efficacy, and societal implications.
