Billionaire financiers Mark Walter and Todd Boehly are nearing a deal to sell their stakes in Chelsea FC to Clearlake Capital, the club's majority owner. This transaction, first reported by Bloomberg, values Chelsea at about $5 billion. The deal will increase Clearlake's ownership from 61.5% to as high as 99.9% if Hansjorg Wyss also sells his stake, giving Clearlake full control. The sale allows Walter and Boehly to make a small profit, consistent with the initial investment terms.
The sale marks the end of a rocky four-year co-ownership for Boehly and Walter, who, alongside Wyss, acquired Chelsea in 2022 for £2.5 billion, with an additional £1.75 billion committed to club investment. Despite a FIFA Club World Cup win in 2025, their tenure saw significant managerial turnover (five managers, with only one not fired), a 10th-place Premier League finish last season, and sanctions from UEFA and the Premier League for financial rule-breaking. Behdad Eghbali, co-founder of Clearlake Capital, has been running the club since January 2023, and his relationship with Boehly has reportedly been challenging.
While the headline valuation is $5 billion, financial analysts suggest the implied equity value is closer to $3.2-$3.5 billion, not $5 billion, to reconcile with the reported "small profit" for the sellers. The transaction is a secondary transfer of shares between insiders, meaning no new money will flow into the club, nor will it alter Chelsea's revenue, costs, debt, or UEFA settlement. It primarily changes who has control rather than the club's financial operations. Walter, who recently sold his stake in the Los Angeles Lakers for $9.2 billion, indicated through a spokesman that he did not initiate the sale but intends to pursue future sports investments.
