Venezuela is set to ship aluminum to the United States, marking a significant step in the revival of commercial ties after years of economic and diplomatic isolation. This move, facilitated by a deal with Mercuria Energy Group Ltd. and Heeney Capital, will see the country diversify its exports beyond oil.
The initial shipment, a modest 15,000 metric tons of aluminum, was produced by the state-owned company Venalum and is scheduled to depart Venezuela as early as Friday. This represents the first such cargo destined for the US in several years, signaling a shift in Venezuela's trade relationships.
This development follows earlier agreements between Mercuria Energy Group and Heeney Capital for Venezuelan bulk commodities and metals, including gold. Mercuria, in partnership with Heeney Capital, had previously signed deals worth approximately $2.2 billion annually, and the companies are reportedly pursuing additional agreements for Venezuelan aluminum, nickel, and iron products.
