U.S. spirits maker Sazerac Co., known for brands like Southern Comfort and Buffalo Trace, is reportedly evaluating a potential acquisition of German schnapps producer Berentzen-Gruppe AG. The discussions are described as being in an exploratory, preliminary phase, and sources familiar with the matter emphasized that a deal might not materialize.

Berentzen-Gruppe AG is a relatively small publicly traded company, with a market capitalization of €33.7 million, which translates to approximately $38.9 million. Neither Sazerac nor Berentzen provided public confirmation regarding the potential acquisition; a Sazerac representative declined to comment, and a Berentzen spokesperson did not immediately respond to inquiries.

This comes as Berentzen has faced significant financial challenges, with its first-quarter 2026 revenue dropping 10% to €35.2 million ($38.4 million) and profit before interest and taxes (EBIT) plummeting over 80% to €200,000 ($218,000) from €1.2 million ($1.3 million) in the prior year. This downturn is attributed to a sharp contraction in consumer demand for alcohol in Germany, particularly impacting its spirits segment and its private-label whiskey business. The company is accelerating its "Evolve 2030" strategy to reduce reliance on alcohol sales and increase non-alcoholic revenue to over 50%. Sazerac has recently been active in M&A, having acquired UK-based Au Vodka and pursuing new deals after a previous transaction fell through.

The current report does not disclose any specific financial terms, timelines, or the strategic rationale behind Sazerac's interest, beyond the market value of Berentzen. The absence of public comment from both parties and the preliminary nature of the talks contribute to uncertainty for investors and stakeholders in the beverages sector.
