President Donald Trump announced a proposal to send a $5,000 "dividend" to every American adult citizen if Republicans secure control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections. This promise was made during the GOP's midterm convention in Dallas. Trump stated that the payout would amount to approximately $1.2 trillion, based on an estimated 240 million adult citizens in the U.S. He described this payment as a "great infusion" into the economy.
While some Republicans, such as Rep. Jim Jordan (R., Ohio), expressed openness to the idea, stating a desire to let families keep more money, and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R., La.) noted that the proposal was in its early stages, many others have voiced skepticism. Several fiscally conservative Republicans are concerned about the substantial $1.2 trillion cost of the program, which could also accrue hundreds of billions in interest if approved by Congress. They also worry about the potential for increased inflation and the country's fiscal stability.
Trump, however, suggested that Congressional approval might not even be necessary for the $5,000 dividend. He told CBS News that he believes lawmakers would support the plan if needed, but indicated he might not require their formal approval. He also claimed that the country had brought in "trillions of dollars in tariffs," despite the Treasury collecting only $256 billion in tariff revenue the previous year, which he suggested could fund the dividend.
