President Prabowo Subianto has undertaken an overhaul of his economic team, a move interpreted by investors as an acknowledgment of previous policy costs and a signal for more stable policymaking. This leadership change comes after a similarly sudden change at the central bank, with investors initially unnerved by previous economic shifts.
A key aspect of this overhaul is the replacement of Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa with Suahasil Nazara. Nazara, a market-friendly veteran who served as deputy finance minister for seven years and under former finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, is seen as a sign of prudence and the government's recognition of fiscal challenges. His appointment aims to ease market concerns following a period where Indonesian stocks erased nearly all gains after Indrawati's departure last September.
Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa's removal marks the second surprise shake-up in the finance ministry within about a year. His tenure was characterized by investor uncertainty, a plummeting rupiah, a ballooning fiscal deficit, and friction with the central bank due to his pro-growth policies. Ratings agencies had downgraded Indonesia's credit outlook from positive to negative, citing policy uncertainty and fiscal spending plans, impacting the $1.4 trillion G20 economy. Nazara has pledged to maintain the fiscal deficit below 3% of GDP and ensure a credible state budget, focusing on supporting government priority programs.
