Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto reshuffled his cabinet on Monday, replacing Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa with his deputy, Suahasil Nazara. This move comes after Purbaya's year in office, which saw a crisis of investor confidence, a plummeting rupiah, a ballooning fiscal deficit, and downgrades to Indonesia's credit rating outlook by two agencies, from positive to negative. Analysts view Nazara's appointment as a signal that the government acknowledges its fiscal challenges and is moving towards more prudent economic management.

Purbaya, who had replaced long-standing Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati last September, was known for pursuing aggressive pro-growth policies over fiscal prudence. His tenure was marked by economic shocks, including a significant depreciation of the rupiah and increased friction with the central bank over his policy of injecting liquidity into banks. A recent controversy involved his sudden announcement that sovereign wealth fund Danantara Indonesia would transfer 120 trillion rupiah ($6.8 billion) of its profits to the government, a claim later denied by Danantara's head.

Suahasil Nazara, who previously served under former Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and as Deputy Finance Minister since 2019, has committed to maintaining fiscal discipline. After his inauguration, he stated that his priority is to run a credible state budget and ensure the fiscal deficit remains below the legislated limit of 3% of GDP. This shift in leadership is seen as an attempt to restore investor confidence and stabilize Indonesia's economy after a turbulent period.
