An American mining company, Almonty Industries Inc., has entered into a binding agreement with the Rwandan government to source and process tungsten. This partnership is part of a broader push to establish a Western-aligned supply chain for the strategic metal, with the goal of decreasing dependence on China for its supply.
Under the terms of the agreement, Rwanda will acquire a 25% stake in a local unit of Almonty. This ownership will be granted in exchange for Rwanda contributing an exploration concession and a processing license. Almonty Industries, based in Dillon, Montana, will retain the remaining 75% ownership of the venture.
The deal was disclosed on Monday, September 14, 2026, and marks a significant step in securing critical mineral supplies for the US and other Western countries. The collaboration is intended to modernize and expand Rwanda's tungsten sector while strengthening trade ties and long-term supply-chain security between Rwanda and the United States.
