An American mining company, Almonty Industries Inc., has entered into a binding agreement with the Rwandan government to source and process tungsten from the African nation. This partnership is part of a broader effort to establish a Western-aligned supply chain for the strategic metal, thereby decreasing dependence on China, which currently dominates global tungsten production.
Under the terms of the agreement, Rwanda will acquire a 25% stake in a local unit of Almonty Industries. This stake will be acquired by contributing an exploration concession and a processing license to the venture. Almonty Industries, based in Dillon, Montana, will retain the remaining ownership balance.
This deal highlights the increasing importance of securing alternative sources for critical minerals. Tungsten is vital for various industrial and defense applications, including aerospace components, industrial cutting tools, electronics, and defense manufacturing. The United States, in particular, relies heavily on tungsten imports, with domestic production being negligible. China's significant control over global supply and its tightening export controls have underscored the need for diversified sources.
