Novo Nordisk A/S announced on September 14, 2026, that it will shorten its name for day-to-day operations to just "Novo" and is updating its corporate identity, including tweaking its trademark bull logo to face right. This rebranding effort is part of a broader strategy to enhance its recognition and competitiveness, particularly in the booming obesity drug market, where it faces intense competition from rivals like Eli Lilly. The company aims to make its brand more memorable and relevant to consumers as it pushes for increased market share.
The change comes as Novo Nordisk is grappling with significant competition, with its market share in the obesity space standing at 38.8% in the second quarter, trailing behind Eli Lilly's 60.9% according to IQVIA data cited in a Lilly earnings presentation. Shares of Novo have dropped approximately 15% this year. The rebrand, along with a new corporate culture dubbed 'The Novo Way' and a tagline "Lasting Health Starts Now," is intended to help the company navigate an increasingly consumer-driven market and regain momentum. These changes will be further detailed at Novo's Capital Markets Day on September 21.
While the company will use "Novo" for branding and daily operations, "Novo Nordisk A/S" will remain its legal corporate name, honoring its history stemming from the 1989 merger of two Danish pharmaceutical companies. The strategic shift also encompasses new operating principles focused on patient innovation, performance, clear priorities, simplified workflows, and unwavering commitment to patient safety and ethics. CEO Mike Doustdar emphasized that the rebrand aims to make healthcare more responsive and relevant, enhancing how the company operates and competes.
