GE HealthCare Technologies is reportedly in talks to acquire Sofie Biosciences, a developer of radiopharmaceutical solutions, in a deal estimated to be worth around $1 billion. This potential acquisition, reported by the Financial Times, would further bolster GE HealthCare's position in the molecular imaging market.
The move aligns with GE HealthCare's strategy to expand its pharmaceutical diagnostics segment. The company recently completed its acquisition of the remaining 50% stake in Nihon Medi-Physics (NMP) from Sumitomo Chemical, gaining full ownership. NMP, a leading radiopharmaceutical company in Japan, generated revenues of 28.2 billion JPY (approximately $183 million) in 2023 and is expected to play a key role in GE HealthCare's aim to become a leader in the $7 billion molecular imaging global market.
Furthermore, GE HealthCare recently entered into an exclusive licensing agreement with Lantheus for its prostate cancer imaging agent, piflufolastat F18 (PYLARIFY), in Japan. This deal, leveraging NMP's expertise and manufacturing network, gives GE HealthCare access to a leading PSMA PET imaging agent, which has been used in over 500,000 scans in the U.S. and is anticipated to address the rising incidence of prostate cancer in Japan. These strategic initiatives underscore GE HealthCare's aggressive expansion in the radiopharmaceutical and molecular imaging sectors, focusing on advanced diagnostics for various diseases.
