On September 13, a Russian drone hit the locomotive of a Kyiv-Warsaw passenger train approximately two kilometers from Ukraine's border with Poland. Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) reported that there were no casualties because a monitoring team had detected the threat in advance and warned the train crew. This incident occurred during a massive nationwide drone assault by Russia, which also saw a gas station near the Yahodyn checkpoint on the Ukrainian-Polish border damaged, leading to a large fire. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attacks, calling them "Putin's terror" and urging the EU and NATO to impose stronger sanctions.
The widespread Russian drone attacks over the past day resulted in at least six civilian deaths and 43 injuries across Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia launched 453 Shahed and Gerbera drones, along with Parodiya decoy drones and S8000 Banderol missiles. Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted 405 drones and six S8000 Banderol missiles, though hits were recorded at 13 locations, and debris fell at seven others. The assault heavily targeted western Ukraine, a region that typically experiences fewer attacks compared to Kyiv, Odesa, and front-line areas.
Specific regions in western Ukraine reported significant damage. In Volyn Oblast, five people were injured by drone attacks. Rivne Oblast experienced power outages in parts of Dubno and the Rivne district, with an enterprise in Sarny district destroyed. Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast saw damage to an industrial facility and an apartment building, with one person injured. Ternopil reported damage to transport infrastructure and an industrial building, also injuring one person. Khmelnytskyi Oblast had a fire at an enterprise due to falling drone debris, and Lviv Oblast had several residential and utility buildings, as well as a school, damaged. No injuries were reported in Khmelnytskyi or Lviv.
Further south, Odesa Oblast suffered damage to civilian infrastructure, including a residential building, private homes, warehouses, and a children's sanatorium, with a fire at the Botanical Garden. Casualties in Odesa were still being clarified. In Mykolaiv Oblast, a 71-year-old woman was killed in a separate overnight drone attack. These strikes on western Ukraine are part of an increasing trend of Russian drones reaching these areas during large-scale national assaults, targeting energy, transport, and other infrastructure.
