UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for the 16th general election (GE16) in Malaysia to be expedited. Speaking at the UMNO general assembly 2026, Zahid emphasized that his party seeks to lead the federal government with a new mandate, rather than merely being a component of the existing unity government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. This call comes amidst strained relations between UMNO and its unity government partner, Pakatan Harapan.
Zahid, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister, expressed that the time has come for a general election, stating it reflects the will of the people. His stance is bolstered by Barisan Nasional's recent successes in the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state polls. He stressed that GE16 would be a pivotal election for UMNO, aiming to reclaim its mandate to lead. He also noted that while recent state victories were encouraging, they do not guarantee national success, urging party members to work towards returning UMNO to power.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, however, has repeatedly indicated his preference to complete the full five-year term, which ends in December 2027. Despite Zahid's push, Anwar's government currently holds a parliamentary majority, making it difficult for an early election to be forced without a significant shift in alliances. UMNO's push for early polls is supported by PAS, the largest opposition party, who also believes a fresh mandate is needed to address political uncertainty. The upcoming tabling of the federal Budget in October is seen as a critical test for Anwar's government, as a failure to secure its approval could lead to a loss of confidence and potentially trigger an early election.
