A defense technology firm supported by Erik Prince has acquired a Ukrainian manufacturer of unmanned ground vehicles in a transaction valued at $224 million. This deal marks a significant step towards consolidation within Ukraine's defense technology sector, an industry that has grown substantially since 2022.
Ukraine's defense tech market has experienced rapid expansion, with its value estimated at $6.8 billion this year by the Kyiv School of Economics, a six-fold increase from 2021. The number of private defense companies has also surged to as high as 1,200, more than double the figures from 2023, with an estimated capacity to produce $50 billion worth of weapons. Last year, Ukrainian companies supplied 82% of the army's needs, a substantial increase from 46% in 2024.
This growth has led to a natural consolidation trend, as larger companies acquire smaller ones and firms merge to form more robust entities capable of attracting investments over $20 million. While some in the industry express concerns about potential favoritism in state contracts, the move towards a more consolidated market aligns with the Defense Ministry's goal of streamlining the "drone zoo" and eliminating inefficient companies. Investment in the sector has also significantly increased, from $28.7 million in 2024 to $129 million last year, largely driven by foreign capital, despite limitations on profit margins and export controls.
