Critics accuse him of neglecting meetings with constituents, including a children's hospital and paralyzed veterans, while prioritizing appearances on conservative media outlets like Fox News to discuss topics like Israel.
Several prominent Pennsylvania Democrats have openly condemned Fetterman. Representative Brendan Boyle called him a "disgrace" and a "lazy trust fund baby," while Representative Chris Deluzio described his behavior as "pathetic" and questioned his sense of duty. Former opponents in the 2022 Democratic primary, Conor Lamb and State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta, have also spoken out, with Kenyatta stating Fetterman "barely showed up as [lieutenant governor] and is constantly MIA as our Senator."
Polls indicate a stark divide in Fetterman's approval. A Quinnipiac University poll showed only 19 percent of Democrats approving of his performance, with 69 percent disapproving. Conversely, 77 percent of Republicans approved, while only 12 percent disapproved. A New York Times and Siena University poll similarly found only 20 percent of Democrats viewed him favorably, compared to 79 percent of Republicans. A significant portion of Democrats, 57 percent, expressed a desire for him to leave the party.
Fetterman has dismissed the criticisms as "smears" and "half-truths," particularly regarding leaked staff texts. He apologized for a "dumb joke" about the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) officials wanting "free trips to D.C." and clarified that he has met with hospital representatives. He also stated he took steps to express condolences to the families of fallen police officers, despite reportedly skipping their funeral. Despite the Democratic condemnation, Senator Dave McCormick, a Pennsylvania Republican, has come to Fetterman's defense, highlighting a surprising alliance.
The ongoing controversy suggests a challenging re-election bid for Fetterman in 2028, with many Democrats in Pennsylvania considered potential primary challengers. His increasing alignment with conservative media and strong pro-Israel stance have been noted as factors contributing to his alienation from parts of the Democratic base.
