Chinese markets are experiencing a significant boom in public stock offerings, particularly energized by artificial intelligence and advanced technology. IPOs and secondary listings on the Hong Kong and Shanghai exchanges have raised over $54 billion so far in 2026, surpassing last year's total of over $46 billion. This accounts for roughly 21% of global IPO proceeds, ranking behind Nasdaq's approximately 55% share, which was boosted by SpaceX's $75 billion IPO.

Key examples include CXMT, China's largest memory chipmaker, which raised over $8.6 billion in Shanghai in July, seeing its shares jump 466% on the first day. Unitree, a humanoid robot maker, debuted in August with shares soaring 460% initially. Tencent-backed Enflame Technology also saw its IPO retail tranche oversubscribed by 4,073 times, raising approximately $911 million. These massive first-day surges have generated substantial, albeit sometimes temporary, gains for retail investors.

The enthusiasm, however, is coupled with investor wariness regarding a potential AI bubble. While companies like Unitree saw initial gains of 460%, its share price subsequently fell over 40% from its peak. Analysts like Ruiying Zhao of S&P Global Market Intelligence question if AI sentiment alone is sufficient for a durable market cycle, emphasizing the need for sustainable revenue, visible profit margins, and realistic valuations. Perris Lee of ION Analytics noted CXMT's IPO placed China in a strategically significant position for AI tech manufacturing, supporting China's tech self-sufficiency goals. The boom also reflects a preference for listing closer to home due to stricter U.S. and Chinese regulatory scrutiny of overseas listings.

Notably, the e-commerce giant Shein also debuted in Hong Kong, raising $1.7 billion, but its IPO was somewhat overshadowed by the AI investment frenzy. The company's valuation of around $27 billion is a fraction of its peak valuation a few years ago. While some companies, like Shanghai Biren Technology and Zhipu AI, have seen their market caps surge, the sustainability of these high valuations remains a key concern for investors.
