Franklin Templeton announced its acquisition of Stoneshield Capital, a European real assets investment firm, marking a significant expansion of Franklin Templeton's global real assets platform. Stoneshield Capital, founded in 2018 by Felipe Morenés Botín and Juan Pepa, has rapidly grown to manage over $8 billion in assets. This acquisition will integrate Stoneshield's expertise in sectors such as energy infrastructure, logistics, industrial storage, and student housing into Franklin Templeton's offerings, further diversifying its investment strategies.
The acquisition comes shortly after Stoneshield Capital successfully closed its Opportunity Fund IV at its hard cap of €1.5 billion (approximately $1.64 billion), having attracted over €2 billion in aggregate interest and surpassing its initial €1 billion target. This fund, which closed within six months, was double the size of its predecessor and secured commitments from a diverse group of global investors. Fund IV has already made several key investments, including a €150 million joint venture with Neinor Homes in Spain, a 9.5% stake in Meliá Hotels International, and a 15% stake in Exolum, an energy logistics and critical biofuels infrastructure platform.
Stoneshield's strategic focus on building and scaling operational platforms across European real assets, often through control-oriented investments, aligns with current market trends favoring resilient and growing demand sectors. Their portfolio includes significant stakes in companies like Neinor Homes, MiCampus (a student housing platform), Solaria (a renewable energy and digital infrastructure platform), and Meliá. This acquisition will enable Franklin Templeton to leverage Stoneshield's established presence and successful track record in the European market, enhancing its ability to capitalize on structural trends and operational complexities within the real assets sector. Meanwhile, Franklin Templeton itself recently launched a European Focused Social Infrastructure Strategy, securing €151 million to invest in healthcare, education, and housing across Europe.
