Automakers like Hyundai, Ford, and Stellantis are developing extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) that combine a substantial battery with a gasoline engine. This approach aims to alleviate consumer range anxiety and dependence on charging infrastructure for long trips, an issue that has contributed to lower-than-expected EV adoption.
Unlike traditional plug-in hybrids, EREVs are propelled exclusively by electric motors, with the gas engine functioning solely as a generator to produce electricity once the battery level falls. This allows the vehicle to drive like an EV while having a backup gas engine to extend total range. For instance, Stellantis is planning a Ram 1500 pickup and a Jeep Grand Wagoneer EREV that could offer up to roughly 690 miles of total range, while Hyundai and its Genesis brand are targeting about 600 miles with upcoming SUVs.
Industry experts view EREVs as a "stepping stone powertrain" that makes sense for many American consumers, especially given elevated gas prices. However, these more complex vehicles are expected to come with higher price tags and require consumer education on their operation. While some analysts caution that this hybrid approach could delay a full transition to electric vehicles and potentially complicate designs or diminish environmental benefits, proponents argue it offers a practical compromise for consumers seeking longer range without full reliance on current charging infrastructure.
